Just the flu? – PHE and NHS unveil the largest ever flu vaccination campaign

By November 6, 2020 No Comments

In an average year, around 11,000 people die from the flu in the UK. This year, due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, these figures are likely to be much higher.

New research from Public Health England (PHE) suggests the risk of death more than doubles for people testing positive for both the flu and Covid-19, compared to those only diagnosed with only coronavirus. This increased danger could have potentially devastating consequences for the NHS and its capacity over the winter months.

Just the Flu? campaign

To help combat this, PHE and NHS England have launched the biggest flu campaign in history. The aim of which is to vaccinate around 30 million people across the UK against the flu. This is the largest number of people that the NHS has ever tried to vaccinate in a single flu season.

The expansion of the flu programme means that many more people will be eligible to receive the free vaccine for the first time but may not realise it. This has led to an increased focus this year on raising awareness in all groups that are eligible.

Another focus of this year’s campaign is to highlight the seriousness and risks of catching the flu for those in at risk groups. The new campaign does this by highlighting the potential dangers of the flu and the deadly complications it can have. It is not ‘just the flu’ for those people who are in these at risk groups.

Promoting the campaign in your waiting room

A range of official ‘Just The Flu?’ videos have now been added to our Envisage Media library to help make all eligible patients in your waiting room aware of the importance of getting vaccinated. This includes videos targeted to those with long term health conditions, children and pregnant women.

We also have other flu vaccination content in our library which clearly explains who is eligible this year, including the differences for patients in Scotland. This ensures that patients fully understand whether they are eligible and when and where to get vaccinated.
