Each year, more and more people are being diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes. It is a leading cause of preventable sight loss in people of working age and is a major contributor to, heart attack, and stroke.
There are around 3.4 million people in England with Type 2 diabetes and around 200,000 new cases are diagnosed every year. While Type 1 diabetes is not linked to lifestyle, Type 2 diabetes is largely preventable through changes in lifestyle.
NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme
The Healthier You: NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme helps to identify those at high risk of Type 2 diabetes and refers them onto a behaviour change programme.
There is strong evidence that programmes like this, which support people to maintain a healthy weight and be more active, can significantly reduce the risk of developing the condition. The programme is a joint commitment from NHS England, Public Health England and Diabetes UK.
To help make patients aware of this programme we have recently added an NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme story video to our Envisage Media library. This new video makes patients more aware of the benefits of the programme, as well as the signs and symptoms of Type 2 diabetes. There are also details of where to get further information and advice.
